Bitcoin ban means one less option for bribing Thai officials

Bitcoin ban means one less option for bribing Thai officials

Thailand isn't exactly known for its unquestionable ethics; activities that would quickly be labeled as illegal in the West are practiced in plain view in Bangkok. Loose regulations mean that a nearly limitless array of goods and services can be purchased with cash and even credit -- a currency like Bitcoin would only be necessary for the most heinous of exchanges. It's a bit ironic, then, that the Thai government is now the world's first to ban Bitcoin. Following a conference at the Bank of Thailand yesterday, the Foreign Exchange Administration and Policy Department voted to make the digital coinage illegal, prohibiting people from buying, selling or trading Bitcoins for goods or services. Additionally, Bitcoins cannot be moved into or out of the country, rendering any current stockpiles worthless. The Bank of Thailand ended its dispatch with a promise to revisit the ruling in the future, though this landmark decision could prove to be the beginning of the end for Bitcoin.

Discovery of New Molecule That Aids in Suffocating Tumors can be Used in Development of New Cancer Drugs

Cancer Research UK scientists at the University of Southampton found that this molecule targets the master switch, HIF-1, that cancer cells use to adapt to low oxygen levels, a common feature in the disease.

The researchers uncovered a way to stop cancer cells using this switch through an approach called 'synthetic biology'. By testing 3.2 million potential compounds, made by specially engineered bacteria, they were able to find a molecule that stopped HIF-1 from working.

All cells need a blood supply to provide them with the oxygen and nutrients they require to survive. Cancer tumours grow rapidly and as the tumour gets bigger it outstrips the supply of oxygen and nutrients that the surrounding blood vessels can deliver.

But, to cope with this low-oxygen environment, HIF-1 acts as a master switch that turns on hundreds of genes, allowing cancer cells to survive. HIF-1 triggers the formation of new blood vessels around tumours, causing more oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the starving tumour, which in turn allows it to keep growing.

Dr Ali Tavassoli, a Cancer Research UK scientist whose team discovered and developed the compound at the University of Southampton, said: "We've found a way to target the steps that cancer cells take to survive and we hope that our research will one day lead to effective drugs that can stop cancers adapting to a low oxygen environment, stopping their growth. The next step is to further develop this molecule to create an effective treatment."

Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, said: "Finding ways to disrupt the tools that cancer cells use to adapt and grow when starved of oxygen has been a hot topic in cancer research, but finding drugs that do this effectively has proved elusive.

"For the first time our scientists have found a way to block a master switch controlling cells response to low levels of oxygen -- an important step towards creating drugs that could halt cancer in its tracks."

Insert Coin: TouchKeys overlay brings whole new meaning to 'tickling the ivories'

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin TouchKeys wants to bring multitouch to musicians with stickon keyboard

Keyboards haven't changed much in the last, oh, few hundred years or so. You play a note by hitting and releasing it, use a pedal to sustain and change volume through the high-tech means of "bashing harder." TouchKeys wants to give you much more control with its touch sensitive, DIY stick-on overlays that can even sense multi-touch. While similar to what we've seen recently with the Roli Seaboard (which has rubberized keys that let you bend notes), TouchKeys can be added to most keyboards and would let you do even more, in theory. Similar to a smartphone screen, it senses up and down or side-to-side finger movements with up to three touches, all of which can be mapped mapped to different sounds or effects. For instance, you can create a vibrato by shaking your hand side-to-side, move up and down to bend notes, use multi-touch pinch and slide to change midi mappings, or play different sounds by multi-tapping.

Most of the kits sold will be DIY, meaning they'll come as self-installed peel-and-stick keys and sensors that fit standard-sized keyboards, starting at £330 for 25 keys. You'll also have to open up the keyboard to tuck in the narrow controller, but the company said it hasn't seen any models that don't work yet. If you're not inclined to futz around, you'll be able to buy a limited number of pre-installed kits starting at £660 with a Novation Impulse 25 keyboard. TouchKeys is looking for a relatively modest £30,000 as its funding goal, so if you're looking for the latest musical edge, hit the source.

iPhone 5C Packaging Spotted in China: Proof a Cheaper iPhone is Coming?

July 28th, 2013 by: Paul Strauss

For months there have been rumors that Apple will release a less expensive version of the iPhone for the masses ? especially in parts of the world where the current gen iPhone is considered too expensive. Images have leaked of colorful, possibly plastic-cased iPhone components, and now we have what appears to be a product name ? the iPhone 5C.

iphone 5c packaging

This tub of plastic packaging clearly labeled ?iPhone 5C? and adorned with the Apple logo was spotted in China and posted on the WeiPhone forums. While they definitely could be boxes for some cheap knock-off iPhones, I?m going to go out on a limb and say this looks legit, and the plastic construction of the packaging would go well with the rumored less-expensive iPhone. Now what the ?C? stands for is anyone?s guess ? perhaps it stands for ?cheap? but I don?t think so. It?s more likely to stand for ?colors,? IMHO.

Regardless of the veracity of this image, I don?t think we?ll be waiting too much longer to see the next iPhones emerge from Apple. All signs point to a September or October reveal of both an inexpensive model and an updated iPhone 5, rumored to be called the iPhone 5S ? though I?d really love for a surprise reveal of an iPhone 6.

Republican National Committee hires California state director

Priebus.jpgThe Republican National Committee announced Wednesday that Clinton Soffer will become its first California state director.

He joins new state directors in 11 other states -- Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin -- as part of a new RNC investment a year ahead of the 2014 elections..

California GOP Chairman Jim Brulte said the state party anticipates Soffer will work as a state field representative in their ground campaign to engage more voters.

"We're rebuilding the California Republican party from the ground up," Brulte said in an interview. "In order to do that, we want a very close relationship with our county parties but also with our national party."

In a statement, RNC chairman Reince Priebus said hiring state directors will allow the party to build "the most expansive field program the GOP has ever seen...Republicans have never made this kind of investment in an off year. The RNC will be in communities engaging with and listening to voters where they live, work, and worship-not months, but years before Election Day."

Soffer, 23, most recently worked on San Diego City Council member Scott Sherman's staff after managing his campaign in the primary election.

Soffer also ran former San Diego Assemblyman and Republican leader George Plescia's ultimately unsuccessful campaign to unseat Sen. Marty Block, D-San Diego in 2012.

He graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a bachelor's degree in political science. While in college, Soffer was the state chairman of the California College Republicans.

Pemex pipe explodes in central Mexico, 7 injured

A pipeline explosion Sunday that injured seven people and sent flames and smoke shooting hundreds of feet into the air in central Mexico was caused by illegal tapping, Mexico's state-owned oil company said.

The pre-dawn explosion in a farm field injured four police officers and three firefighters among those called to the scene by a report of an oil leak, the state prosecutor's office said.

Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, issued a statement on its Twitter account blaming the blast on an attempt to steal oil with an illicit tap. The supply of crude oil through the pipeline was immediately suspended, it said.

The explosion in Tonanitla in central Mexico state did not threaten any of the area's communities, Mexico state Gov. Eruviel Avila said via Twitter.

    There were no evacuations.

An oil leak was first reported about 3:35 a.m. and the explosion occurred at 4 a.m., said Francisco Ventura of the Tecamac municipal police.

Officials reported the fire under control about four hours later.

Illegal tapping is a consistent and serious problem for Pemex, which has seen roughly 20 percent annual increases in thefts of crude oil, gasoline and diesel in recent years, according to Pemex reports and officials. One attempted theft caused an explosion that killed 29 people in December 2010.

Energy Secretary Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, in a widely reported Senate interview in April, said such thefts cost the company about $5 billion a year.

Autoliv to Build Chinese Textile Center

In a bid to be more competitive, auto airbag manufacturer Autoliv announced yesterday that it will invest $50 million to build a new textile center in China that?will consist of a weaving plant, an airbag cushion plant, and a development center for airbag cushions and textiles.

Because of the strong demand for airbags in China and across Asia, Autoliv is looking to reduce supplier costs by becoming vertically integrated. When completed, the new center will give the airbag maker a central hub for its patented "one-piece-woven" technology that makes airbag cushions?almost ready-made on the weaving loom. A separate building on site will manufacture the airbag cushions themselves, which represents a relocation of Autoliv's facility from Shanghai.?

Autoliv President and CEO Jan Carlson said, "The textile center will increase our level of in-house component sourcing and enable standardized designs in Asia region and globally, while shortening and streamlining our supply chain."

The weaving plant will be almost 100,000 square feet in size and will employ around 150 people. The similarly sized cushion facility will employ around 1,000 people. Together with the development center that will be constructed and will focus on standardized designs for the Asia region, Autoliv will have?in-house manufacturing of its OPW across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

The airbag maker?produced 70 million airbag cushions in-house and purchased 40 million from external suppliers for its total production of 110 million complete airbags?globally last year.

Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, Autoliv is?the worldwide leader in airbag?safety systems for all the world's major car manufacturers. Together with its joint ventures, Autoliv has approximately 80 facilities with more than 50,000 employees in 29 countries. It had global sales of?$8.3 billion in 2012.
