London: Twitter apologises but campaigner says wants more action

The British arm of Twitter apologised on Saturday to a group of high-profile women who have been threatened with death and rape on the micro-blogging site, and announced measures to make it easier for users to report abusive tweets.

Twitter had come under increasing pressure to react after a feminist campaigner, several women members of parliament and female journalists were targeted by users who hurled misogynistic abuse at them and in some cases made violent threats.

"I personally apologise to the women who have experienced abuse on Twitter and for what they have gone through," Tony Wang, general manager of Twitter UK, said on his own Twitter feed.

"The abuse they've received is simply not acceptable. It's not acceptable in the real world, and it's not acceptable on Twitter," he said.

Twitter UK said it was adding staff to help handle abuse reports. It also said an in-tweet "report abuse" button currently available on the Twitter app for iPhones would be added to the Twitter website and to platforms used on other mobile devices.

The problem of abuse by so-called internet "trolls" has been front-page news in Britain since activist Caroline Criado-Perez was hit by a barrage of vitriolic tweets after successfully campaigning for a woman's face to appear on bank notes.

In recognition of her role, Criado-Perez appeared alongside Bank of England Governor Mark Carney on July 24, when he announced 19th century novelist Jane Austen would become the face of the new 10-pound note.

Police arrested two men over rape threats against Criado-Perez. One of them was also suspected of making rape threats against opposition Labour legislator Stella Creasy, who backed the bank note campaign and also appeared with Carney on July 24.

In separate incidents days later, several high-profile female journalists received tweets from someone threatening to bomb their homes and "destroy everything" there.

NFL Hall of Fame Game: Tony Romo Doesn?t Think He Will Play Sunday

Home ? NFL ? News ? NFL Hall of Fame Game: Tony Romo Doesn?t Think He Will Play Sunday

Sunday marks the official start of NFL games for the 2013 season with the first preseason game of August in Canton as the Dallas Cowboys take on the Miami Dolphins in the annual Week One preseason Hall of Fame Game.

Jul 23, 2013; Oxnard, CA, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) hands off to running back Lance Dunbar (25) during training camp drills at the River Ridge Fields. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been the subject of most of the lead up into the game as after getting offseason surgery on his back and reporting to camp overweight, Romo?s status for Sunday has been up in the air for much of the last two weeks. As everyone wondered out loud whether or not Romo would come out to play the first series or two for Dallas, Romo remained quiet about the situation as did the Cowboys staff.

Now Romo has came out and said that he doesn?t think he is going to participate in what is an extra preseason game for the Dolphins and Cowboys.

Via Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News, that?s what Romo said Friday when asked about the preseason opener on Sunday. ?Coach Jason Garrett still declined to confirm that Romo won?t play, although Garrett?s initial comments on the topic from more than a week ago provided a pretty strong clue that Romo won?t make the usual one-series cameo appearance at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.

One one hand, it?s no big deal for Romo to miss anywhere from three to 10 snaps. ?On the other hand, if he can?t suit up for anywhere from three to 10 snaps it is obvious that he is having issues from offseason surgery to remove a benign cyst from his back.

It is an extra game, but if Romo?s status isn?t better for Friday?s preseason game against Oakland it might be time to worry in Dallas considering that Jerry Jones just gave Romo a huge pile of money this spring. They will want their investment back to full health ASAP.

(AP) ? A hot air balloon festival at a former NATO airfield in eastern France broke two records in as many days this week ? first by sending up 408 piloted balloons in an hour, then by lining up 391 balloons on the runways and sending them up together.

The sound of hundreds of gas burners blasting simultaneously is extraordinary, said Denis Martignon, a pilot who flew both days.

"It was an impressive wall of balloons," Martignon said.

The annual Lorraine Mondial Air Balloons is organized by a descendent of the 18th century aeronautics pioneer Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier who took up the family hobby. Philippe Buron Pilatre has been piloting balloons since 1979.

"My father flew. My son flies. My brother flies. Someday my grandson might fly," he said Friday.

Johnson: Spare us the hypocritical anger on baseball steroid scandal

Mr. Moseby?Mr. Lloyd Moseby speaks out on steroids.

?I?m surprised,?? Lloyd Moseby is saying, ?that people are surprised, more than anything, to tell you the truth. I?m shocked that people are shocked.?? The lurid headlines have returned, almost on cue, to stain America?s Game, long since shorn of the sense of sepia-toned romance that promised a refuge of sanity in an increasingly insane world. The Biogensis case of performance-enhancing drugs is only the latest to soil an increasingly soiled sports world in general and baseball specifically.

...Cheating, says Moseby bluntly, is one thing. A bad thing. Undeniably. But complicit silence, insidious hypocrisy, isn?t exactly a shining virtue, either.

?This is the era. This goes back a ways. The owners knew it. The commissioner knew it. He was happy that Sammy Sosa and (Jason) Giambi and (Mark) McGwire were hitting all those home runs. They saved the game. And so now you want to back up and say ?Oh, what a terrible thing!? ?It?s kind of silly for anyone to say ??- Moseby grabs theatrically at his heart ??Oh, I?m shocked! I can?t believe he was doing it!? ?Stop it.

?Some ex-players are angry. Not me. I just laugh and say ?Who didn?t know about it?? ?I am angry that the commissioner is doing what he?s doing. Now he wants to punish the kids. Now he wants to start passing the buck onto the second generation of people doing it.?? At 53, the irrepressible Shaker is looking a lot like a favourite old glove.

...?I love baseball. I love the game. I?ll never stop loving the game. The stats are kind of what get you, though. For us as older players, we know what we did. The stats have climbed. Suddenly you had guys hitting 50, 60, 70 home runs. I knew I was better than this guy, but he had better stats than me. But do they really care (about the Hall of Fame, about Cooperstown)? They live in mansions. They got $100 million contracts. Keep ?em out of the Hall of the Fame all you want, they?re still driving Lamborghinis. So Alex Rodriguez is not going to make another $30 million? So what? He?s already made half a billion.?? More lurid headlines await, more big names are set for exposure.

Florida Education Commissioner Resigns Following Grading Scandal

Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett announces his resignation Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, in Tallahassee, Fla. amid allegations that he changed the grade of a charter school run by a major Republican donor during his previous job as Indiana's school chief.

Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett announces his resignation Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, in Tallahassee, Fla. amid allegations that he changed the grade of a charter school run by a major Republican donor during his previous job as Indiana's school chief.

After coming under fire for allegedly changing the grade of a charter school while he was serving as Indiana's schools chief, Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett announced on Thursday he would resign.

[RANKINGS: Florida?s Best High Schools]

Bennett said at a news conference it would be "unfair" to the children in Florida for him to continue to serve as the education commissioner, and that he did not want to get in the way of Gov. Rick Scott's efforts to reform the state's education system.

The Florida Department of Education called an emergency meeting to appoint an interim commissioner and said in a notice that Bennett's departure "created an immediate danger to public welfare." Bennett was appointed to the position in December after he failed to be re-elected in Indiana.

Bennett has faced increasing pressure to resign since The Associated Press published a story on Monday showing he and his staff worked to change Indiana's "A-F" grading system, which he created, to ensure the Christel House Academy, a charter school which is run by an influential Republican donor, would receive an "A" rather than a "C," despite poor test scores.

The grading system evaluates schools each year based on students' performance on annual English and math assessments, year-to-year improvement, graduation rates and "college and career readiness."

The school's founder, Christel DeHaan, has given millions to Republican political campaigns over the last several years, the AP reported.

But Bennett denied that the school received special treatment, saying the reports were "malicious" and "unfounded" and that several schools benefitted from the changes.

[REPORT:?High School Students Have Made No Progress in 40 Years]

He maintains that the schools received lower grades because they were penalized for not having 11th and 12th grades, and that scores for those grades came in at zero. He even called on Indiana's inspector general to investigate the issue and says he is "fearless about what they will find."

"That wasn't rigging anything," Bennett told reporters. "We did the right thing for Indiana schools and Indiana children."

Jeb Bush, a former governor of Florida, defended Bennett's actions and said he created a system to help students achieve their "God-given potential."

"Today, more Hoosier kids are graduating high school ready for college or a career and fewer are dropping out," Bush said in a statement. "The data is clear; thanks to Tony's leadership children are better prepared for success."

But the scandal calls into question the validity of school grading systems ? which exist in several states, including Maine, Oklahoma and Florida ? and other student performance measures.

In order to prepare students and teachers for the Common Core State Standards, many state education officials have implemented higher standards and say declines in school ratings reflect a push for more rigorous assessments.

In some cases, student performance measures affect overall school grades, which can influence how much state funding a school receives, or if they will receive assistance and oversight from the Department of Education.

[READ:?Most States Not Ready For Common Core Standards]

During Bennett's tenure as education commissioner in Florida, for example, state officials pressured him to implement a "safety net" that would prevent schools from dropping more than one letter grade each year. Despite the padded grades, several schools in Florida saw declines when the grades were released in late July.

Other states, such as Georgia, have proposed tying teacher pay to student performance. The state received a nearly $400 million grant from Race to the Top, a multi-billion dollar fund from the Education Department intended to spur educational reform. A portion of Georgia's grant was intended to create a teacher evaluation program, but the Department of Education notified the state it may withhold nearly $10 million of the grant when state officials said they wanted to delay implementing the merit pay plan.

"We will continue to work with federal officials to develop a plan regarding this issue," said Georgia School Superintendent John Barge, in a statement. "But it is critical that we establish an accurate measurement tool for educator performance before we ever consider linking it to merit bonuses for Georgia's teachers."

Mayor Rybak To Officiate 42 Weddings In 6 Hours

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? Sixty-three same sex couples will legally marry at Minneapolis City Hall beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

Volunteers have spent Wednesday decorating the rotunda in preparation for the night.

And like a student studying for a test, Mayor R.T. Rybak is getting to know the couples he?ll be marrying.

?I never want to have a day where it feels like a conveyor belt of love,? Rybak said.

Rybak was ordained six years ago, and he?s officiated about a dozen weddings. He?ll more than triple that total between midnight and 6:00 a.m. as personally officiates 42 weddings in all.

?I?m used to doing 42 different things in a day. I?m just not used to them all being weddings,? he said. ?But I think we?ll manage though. It?s a pretty important piece of history.?

From the music to the flowers everything at City Hall was all made possible because of donations.

?It?s a wonderful feeling to be so included,? said Phil Oxman.

Oxman and Harvey Zuckman have been together for nearly 38 years. In front of Rybak, they?ll finally make it official at City Hall.

?I never thought it would happen in our lifetime. Never, ever,? Zuckman said.

?We just thought it?s been 13 years, we can wait three days,? said Tom DeGree.

DeGree and Dean Schlaak are waiting to get married on Saturday. But as the owners of Wilde Roast Caf?, they are hosting a reception for more than 400 people Wednesday night.

Seven years ago they had a commitment ceremony. Now, Tom and Dean are ready for a wedding.

?Our first ceremony, our pastor started out the service with, ?Some people might think what we are doing here today is radical, but love is radical.? And that?s what we are excited to see,? Schlaak said.

In addition to the 42 weddings Rybak will be presiding over, judges will do another 21 weddings at City Hall.

There will also be a reception at Hotel Minneapolis that will go until 6 a.m. Thursday.

Oakland Raiders need Jacoby Ford on the field

NAPA -- Jacoby Ford, walking quickly and without a limp, was rejecting interview requests with a quick shake of the head when approached by the Raiders public relations staff after practice.

Ford had missed his second straight day with an undisclosed injury Tuesday. Since it's frowned upon by coach Dennis Allen to discuss injuries, and it's a subject that has dominated the last two seasons of Ford's NFL career, his reluctance was understandable.

At one point, Ford did stop to talk with a Sirius NFL radio crew, expressing the hope he would be back at practice soon, with the Raiders taking Wednesday off and returning to practice Thursday at 2:50 p.m.

Ford was one of the Raiders' most explosive playmakers as a rookie out of Clemson in 2010, but his future will be determined by his ability to practice.

"We need Jacoby out here," Allen said after Ford's first missed practice Monday. "He's missed a lot of time, and he's got to get some work."

Ford, like a high-performance sports car that has spent too much time in the garage, knows he needs the reps.

He stopped to talk after a practice the previous weekend, saying, "You can't just jump right back into it. Regardless of how good you are, you just won't be right back to how you were. You definitely have to get back into football shape and get your football legs back in front of you."

Ford's rookie season included a club record three kickoff returns for touchdowns, 10 rushes for 155 yards and two scores and 25 receptions for 470 yards and two touchdowns.

In a 23-20 overtime win over Kansas City, Ford set up the game-tying field goal by stealing a 29-yard completion from cornerback Brandon Flowers and then set up the game-winning field goal in overtime with a 47-yard reception.

He returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and finished the game with six catches for 148 yards and four kickoff returns for 156 yards.

In 2011, Ford added a fourth kickoff return for a touchdown but was slowed by a hamstring injury before finally having his season end after eight games because of a foot injury.

Last season, in the second preseason game, Ford reinjured the same foot. Attempts at rehabilitation failed, and he eventually had surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury, never playing a down in 2012.

Teammates, including running back Darren McFadden, attempted to boost his spirits.

"I was definitely down and out for a while," Ford said. "I really didn't want to talk to anybody or be around anybody. When I started getting around my teammates, you'd be amazed how much that helps you with the whole process."

McFadden, whose own Lisfranc injury cost him the last nine games of the 2011 season, knew what Ford was going through.

"I'm a guy who can pretty much relate to that," McFadden said. "I told him you can't concern yourself with things you can't control. Go out and play the game when you're on the field."

Other than dealing with a minor hamstring issue, Ford's offseason went well, and he spent a lot of time working with quarterback Matt Flynn and other receivers at Laney College. During the first few practices at camp, Ford looked comfortable and explosive on catch-and-run quick slant routes.

"He's a weapon, when healthy, that we need to utilize whatever way we can, whether it's running routes, handoffs, or whatever," Flynn said. "We have to find a way to utilize that speed and quickness and getting him into the open field."

Ford said his mindset is similar to his rookie season.

"I'm reverting back to that," Ford said. "I'm starting all over again. That's kind of what it feels like."

  • With five defensive tackles either not practicing or unable to finish practice Wednesday, the Raiders announced the signing of free agent Myles Wade (6-foot-1, 300 pounds). Wade, out of Portland State, has been with Seattle and Tampa Bay without seeing game action.
