A newly published study claims that drinking coffee could protect against oral pharyngeal (mouth or throat) cancer, even in people who smoke. The American Cancer Society-sponsored study began in 1982 and has found that drinking more than four cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of developing cancer by 49%, compared to those who never or rarely drink coffee.
Oral/pharyngeal cancer is one of the top ten most common cancers among American Men, alongside prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon and rectal cancer, bladder cancer, skin cancer, lymphoma, leukemia, pancreatic cancer and kidney cancer.? It includes cancers of all areas of the mouth, including the throat and is thought to be caused by tobacco and alcohol use or gene mutation.
It is estimated that 40,250 American men and women will be diagnosed with oral pharyngeal cancer in 2012, with 7,850 dying as a result of the disease.
The Study
Following early studies that indicated coffee could reduce the risk of developing oral cancer, the American Cancer Society studied nearly a million men and women who were free of cancer in 1982, to see if there really was a strong inverse link between drinking coffee and oral cancer.
The research found that between 1982 and 2008 868 of the 968,432 participants died from oral cancer, but those who drank 4 or more cups of caffeinated coffee every day had a 49% lower risk of developing the cancer than occasional coffee drinkers.
The study found that with every cup less the participants consumed, the risks of developing mouth cancer increased slightly, with a 33% reduced risk for those consuming 2-3 cups a day and 26% reduced risk for those having one cup of coffee per day. Researchers also discovered a smaller reduction in oral cancer risk for those who drank decaffeinated coffee, but none for regular tea drinkers.
It?s not the Caffeine
It is doubtful whether it is the caffeine in coffee that reduces the risks of oral cancer; the preventative effects are attributed to the high levels of antioxidants, polyphenols and active compounds, all of which help to fight cancer cells.
The researchers are not sure at this time why coffee should stop oral pharyngeal cancer, and without more research they can?t be certain that coffee was entirely responsible for the reduction in cancer, as the study only looked at cancer-related deaths and not diagnosis. Nor are they saying at this point that everyone should be drinking four or more cups of coffee a day. It is clear, however, that there is some link between coffee consumption and reduced mouth cancer risks, which is great news for coffee drinkers and yet another clue in the puzzle of preventing and curing cancer.
